i. you are a mish-mash
of never-ending smiles and toxic beauty.
you're a tangle of scattered thoughts
and makeshift perfection; you make
the seven wonders of the world jealous.
"maybe someday arrows
will guide us through the milky way, and we'll use
the stars as stepping stones."
"we'll play hopscotch in the sky, surrounded by
little fragments of dreams that dancers
forgot to remember."
ii. you're the displacement in a
chemical reaction; you're the magnesium,
and i'm mercury (only liquid at room
temperature,
too close to the sun for life to
exist,
and the messenger they loved to
shoot).
you are a butterfly's wings
when it discovers its new skin,
somehow more beautiful in that
single moment than for the rest of its
life. you loved to dissect them:
"maybe if I study them for long enough,
I’ll be able to figure out how to
fly someday."
i already found out flying
is overrated, but i won’t ruin
your dreams.
iii. dirt and crumpled paper airplanes
clog your ribs. on them are all
the words you forced yourself to swallow
instead of spitting them back
at the world (we call home).
sometimes i wish you would cough up
a spare 'beautiful'
and place it in my hand
"maybe someday my heart will find
a new song to sing. i'm tired of rewinding
when i know i'll forget to press play."
iv. kiss kiss kiss, hug hug
cry. leave me alone and you wonder why.
the universe is spinning, and
you're standing still. don't you know
that when the music plays,
you're supposed to dance?
(or did no-one ever teach you how to
play?)
you start off with a maybe and
end with a never. sometimes i wonder
if you are my stormy weather. but then
i shake it off; you're my bittersweet
balcony, overlooking the sky; you're the
momentary moments and the silences where
you don't know why; you're
"maybe one day i'll have enough words
to describe you."
"maybe one day you'll realise that 'nothing'
is a powerful enough word."

a collab not about butterflies
glitter guts, show us your rainbow blood.
untangle the knots between your teeth,
and cut open your scars. tell yourself
you'll remember what to do at the end
of the world: who to love, who to hate,
and why the sun doesn't burn anymore
glitter guts,
you'll be a cold beautiful girl
as the world freezes over
a thousand times more;
another hundred for each
rosepetal on your grave;
a million more for every
heart you didn't break.
glitter guts,
you'll understand that you died alone;
no one held your hand
or told you it would be okay.
but you won't be lonely--
you'll be a part of everything:
the plants, the sky, the ground.

dear derek,
you are beautiful in the way of parked cars with frosted windows and statues with moss trailing up the leg. you are fascinating but unattainable, with blank-shot eyes and lips that are made to smile but never do.
like having a monet turned towards the wall.
i think if youd let me i could tug those lips up in the corner, i could warm you from the inside out, i could chip away the ice and turn you belly-side up in the sunlight. i think about it when youre rubbing your hard-angled cheeks or staring at the clock like it means something more than the warm-flesh bodies around you.
